When I lived in Hanover NH (back in 1977-1981), one of my favourite hangouts was Peter Christians Tavern, home of terrific sandwiches and some of the best mustard sauce and horseradish sauce Ive ever tasted. (My favourite sandwich was either Peters Mothers Favorite or Peters Fathers Favorite, I can never remember which.) Sadly, Julian Mays prediction that the Tavern would still be around in the 21st century was mistaken; but I took comfort in the thought that a branch still existed in New London and I always figured Id visit it one day. Now that too is closing truly the end of an era. I see Im not the only mourner.
The menu is still online, and looking at the description I think it was Peter’s Father’s Favorite.
What a pleasure to find someone else still remembers Julian May’s Pliocene and Galactic Mileau novels with fondness. Shame about the Perseus Spur series, wot? 😉
I never read the Perseus Spur books; I’ve only read Pliocene/Milieu.
(For readers who don’t know what we’re talking about, see here and here. Much of the action (in the modern-day/near-future portions of the series) takes place in Hanover NH, so there are lots of local references.)
This is one the big potential problems with markets – consumer taste can fluctuate wildly, but once a good restaurant/business is gone, it’s gone for good.
True, but it’s hard to know whether this closure was the result of changing consumer preferences or of the government-caused recession.
Another farewell to say. James P. Hogan died recently:

P.C.’s is coming back!
They are set to re-open soon, says a sign attached to the Peter Christian sign in New London.
Also, an ad in the local shopper suggests it will have the same decor, menu, etc… that they’ve had for so many years.
