Part of an Original Crowd

Sheldon has a nice post on why proper individualism is not atomistic – wherein he cites Aristotle, Spencer, and … me!

In related news, I’ve argued elsewhere that it is the least atomistic forms of individualism that have the strongest claim to be called radical individualism.

Hey, you forgot Wittgenstein! For shame!

Who is this “Wittgenstein” of whom you speak?

Some minor figure in the history of philosophy. No one you’d be interested in. I think he’s famous for saying if you can’t talk about something, then you should keep quiet.

By the way, Roderick’s paper (see link above) on the classical roots of radical individualism is fantastic!

Roderick’s paper reinforces my long-held view that it is unfortunate that we did not claim the word socialism for ourselves and that using it unambiguously for our position today would be problematic. Nevertheless, I cannot think of a more descriptive word for the social system that radical (organic) individualists favor. It beats the pants off organic individualism and, of course, capitalism. Despite the downside, I’m tempted to call myself a socialist.
