Transalpine Goodness

[cross-posted at Liberty & Power]

A most welcome arrival today, from a bookseller in Basel: several volumes (specifically 5-8 and 11-12, from the years 1817-1819 – though I suspect the binding dates from somewhat later), Le Censeur Europeen beautifully preserved and in excellent condition (and cheap enough for me to afford them!), of Le Censeur Européen, pioneering journal of radical liberal “industriels” and founders of libertarian class theory Charles Comte, Charles Dunoyer, and Augustin Thierry (about whom more here). Some of these volumes can be found as PDFs online, at Google Books or Gallica; but not all of them, and not this legibly.

Now I just need to build a shrine for them ….

Cool! Since I live in Switzerland, could you tell me please the name of the bookseller – maybe there are more treasures to find … Thanks!

    It was Erasmushaus, in Basel.

I recently ordered an obscure Molinari tome from Librairie-Comestibles in Geneva also.

Are you an anarchist (at least to the extent of Rothbard or Hoppe)? Do you know of any good books or basic arguments a young ignorant stupid student (relative to the audience of this note) could use in ad hoc debates with economics professors. I try to point out how limited government is utopian and unrealizable but I always have trouble when it comes to property rights and a judicial system. They seem to want explicit answers, I keep telling them thats not how the free market works, it just works.

BTW, I met you at the Mises institute and was reading through an unpublished work of yours. I really like your writings.

    Hi George,

    Thanks! Yep, I’m an anarchist.

If you’re looking for a book, there’s no better source, now, then Ed Stringham’s massive anthology Anarchy and the Law. If you want online sources, there’s loads of them here. Some of my own writings on the topic are here.
