In response to the question “If River is Melody, and Melody is girl in the space suit, then how come River doesn’t know who she is? Unless she is lying,” Steven Moffat tweets: “Check out her dialogue in Silence In The Library.”
River says a lot of things in Silence In The Library, but the one that seems most relevant is actually one of the very first things she says: “I lied; I’m always lying.”
(And of course, when we first see her she’s wearing, ahem, a space suit.)
Or: she’s lying that she’s Melody. Remember that when River tries to get The Doctor to realize who she is, she tells him to look at the cradle, not the little bit of needlework in the cradle….
I guess I’m confused: how would that have given The Doctor a hint? I just assumed the little needlework thingy with the name “Melody Pond” in whatever-language-it-was was lying in the cradle…
The prayer leaf was in the cradle, but the Doctor (or so I take it) had also inscribed “Melody Pond” in Gallifreyan circle-script on the outside of the cradle (because he was planning to give it to Amy).

I thought that was because the cradle’s inscription was in Gallifreyan, which the TARDIS (suddenly) can’t translate, but which the Doctor can read.
