Contrary to Fact

WHAT IF issue 7 First we were told: if Edwards had been the nominee when his affair was revealed, it would have handed the election to McCain!

Now we’re being told: if Edwards’ affair had been revealed a few months ago, it might have caused the nomination to go to Clinton instead of Obama!

In other words: we’re being subjected to this story 24/7 because there are circumstances, different from those actually obtaining, in which it would have been an important story.

Should I send Spock a beard trimmer?

Um, wouldn’t Spider-Man be a really odd name to have if *somebody else* had been bitten by a radioactive spider?

Well, it does say “someone else besides Spider-man”; I took that (perhaps with excessive charity) to mean “in addition to” rather than “instead of.” But I haven’t read the comic in question.

Just did some quick web research and yup, I was being too charitable. The comic does mean “instead of” — which makes the question doubly awkwardly worded.

I assume they didn’t go with “What if someone other than Peter Parker had been bitten by the radioactive spider?” because they wanted “Spider-man” in the title, and they didn’t go with “What if someone other than Peter Parker had become Spider-man?” because one of the people who gets bitten in the alternate-timeline story is Betty Brant, who can’t become Spider-man. (I’m just explainin’, not justifyin’.)
