That “dreary speech” (and the follow-up meeting with BP execs) seems to have persuaded BP to agree to stop paying shareholders until at least a $20 billion fund is set up for the Gulf Coast. I think they call that soft power.
That’s funny. First the link broke then it redirected to the wrong article. Try this.
I doubt the speech convinced BP anywhere near as much as what he said to them behind closed doors (probably along the lines of “do you morons realize how helpful for my party it’d be if I simply went medieval on your asses?”).
I imagine the behind-closed-doors bargaining was more along the lines of this:
“Come on, guys. You gotta give me something. Don’t make me have to take one of your toys away.”
