    SPOILER ALERT, okay?

So the actress who’s been announced as the Doctor’s next companion, slated to be introduced in the Christmas special and rumoured to be named Clara Oswin, has shown up early in the season premiere under the name Oswin Oswald. The obvious question, then, is how they’re related.

Are they the same person? First problem: they have different names. Second problem: “Asylum” appears to be, in O.O.’s personal timeline, both her first meeting with the Doctor (since she has to ask who he is) and her last meeting with the Doctor (since she seems to get blown up at the end). Possible solution: she might have managed to upload her consciousness into the Dalek internet at the last minute (remember the Library).

Or are they relatives? (Perhaps twin sisters, perhaps ancestor and descendant.) Could be; the show did something similar with both Gwen and Martha. But why is one’s first name the other’s last name?

In a further complication, it’s rumoured that at some point during the Christmas special the Doctor will be standing at Clara Oswin’s grave in 19th century London. She seems to die as often as Rory.

My first thought is that Oswin will show up out of nowhere with a whole different history, and who or what she is drives her story as his Companion. This also allows them to play off the fact that we and the Doctor know her terrible fate, or what might be her fate.

And while I don’t think much of it, remember that Oswin does address her mother in the opening.

Whoever or whatever she is, I only hope she’s not somehow related to River.

“Oswin” means “God’s friend”; it’s also associated with St. Oswin. “Oswald” means “divine ruler”; it’s also associated with Lee Harvey Oswald. “Clara” means “clear” or “bright”; it’s also associated with the chief protagonist of The Nutcracker, a young girl who is spirited away on Christmas Eve to another world by a magical toy given to her by a mysterious magician. That last bit seems likely to be relevant even if the rest aren’t.

Here’s a reason for thinking it might be the same character rather than a relative: once he gets this close to it, could Moffat resist the idea of giving the Doctor a companion who is in some sense a Dalek?

OTOH, in this video, Caroline Skinner talks about the decision to have Coleman also play Oswin, which certainly sounds as though they’re two different characters.

Note also that “Darla Von Karlsen” contains each of (though not both of) “Dalek” and “Klara.”

There was a recent LRC article that claimed Oswald had a body double trained by the CIA. However, considering the two characters have different names, it seems irrelevent.
