Randians Will Be Randians

Steve Skeates once wrote a comic featuring The Question (a character created by Randian Steve Ditko), in which the hero, asked by the villain “Don’t you remember me?” replies “Now listen, my friend, you weren’t important enough for me to remember!” Ditko had no problem with the last part of the line (after all it sounds a bit like Roark’s one line to Toohey), but he sent Skeates a six-page rant – “a rather daunting and even rather scary letter,” as Skeates recalls – explaining why his hero would never call a criminal “friend” even in jest. Details here.

A villain may refer to an innocent victim as friend, however. In an early issue of The Amazing Spiderman (it may have been number 1) the Chameleon, after tying up a janitor whom he is about to take the place of, says, “with my multi-pocket disguise vest, I can become anyone, even you friend janitor.” That line has always stuck with me as a great example of unintentional hilarity.

If you are interested in Ditko’s Randian comics you should definitely check out his “Mr. A” character. I bought a couple issues off eBay a few years ago.

Yeah, I got a collection of those some years back.

In the animated Justice League series, the Question spouts Randian dialogue: “Everything that exists has a specific nature. Each entity exists as something in particular and has characteristics that are part of what it is: A is A.”

In the animated Justice League series Lex Luthor calls Mr. Mala a, “half-baked Objectivist.”
