You talk about respect/ They cremated her body. Jewish law totally forbids cremation. The family are a disgrace to all Jewish people.

Why should Jewish law be binding on Amy Winehouse’s family?

Everyone has the right comment, and everyone has the right to an opinion. but is just sad how batter the feelings of her loved ones and her fans and how you have no regard for others sentiments. I just hope when someone close and dear to you dies, no one acts the way you are acting right now. Are you not sentient enough to have some respect for others feelings?

I remember when I saw the video of “Back to Black” for the first time… got stunned by lyrics, music and images. Even though I was really into different kind of music from the one she said to be her influences, I deeply realized she was such a great artist. Unfortunately, I was not lucky enough to see her on a live gig.
    Now, dear Amy, R.I.P.

Amy Winehouse lived doing what she loved, and died doing the same; I’d call that an accomplished existence, rather than a tragedy.

“I’d call that an accomplished existence”

Yes, drunken debauchery is quite the accomplishment.

With due respect to her and her family…an accomplished tragedy. Seriously people the woman needed help, I am all for one living ones own life but when you are dropping shows and getting booed by 20,000 paying fans during a performance you should not have even attempted while under the influence, it is time to re-evaluate your life. That being said I am truely sorry that her voice has been silenced, she was an amazing artist in music and sound in general.

Killing yourself with drugs isn’t considered an “accomplished” existence; it’s stupid and pathetic. Just like the people that glorify such behavior.

“nobody has the right to judge her”

Why not? Do we not have the right to judge Winehouse, but we do have the right to judge “statists”? Or do we not have the right to judge statists either? How about Hitler and Stalin? Does “nobody” have the right to judge them?

        Mr Callahan:

“Why not? Do we not have the right to judge Winehouse, but we do have the right to judge “statists”?”

I am not very sure how Amy Winehouse actions violated the rights of other people as statists actions can and usually do. So your comparison seems…preposterous.

          Firefox 5.0.1 MacIntosh

So the only actions we are entitled to judge negatively are ones that violate the rights of others? Why those, then?

        • Gene Callahan July 25, 2011 at 7:49 pm #

          Firefox 5.0.1 MacIntosh

Sergio: First, yes, as Bob says.

Secondly, if you wish to address me formally (which I don’t demand: I’d be fine with “Gene”!) it’s Dr. Callahan.

Thirdly, I think you are confusing various sorts of judgment. Perhaps we only wish to *politically* judge those who violate the rights of others. (I’d disagree, but I acknowledge it’s a coherent position.) But no one is saying Winehouse should be *prosecuted* for her sins: she’s friggin’ dead, and that ain’t an option on the table. And, for what it’s worth, I am an opponent of the drug war — for one thing, because it makes it *harder* to help someone like Winehouse!

But why can we not judge her in the sense, that, say, we point out to our children, “Look what debauchery did to this wonderfully talented human being: it snuffed out her talents far too early!”

That seems to me to be something that if we are, say, parents, we are (morally) obligated to do. (Again, I don’t think their should be a law passed that says every parent must so criticize her life.)

I think you are right Haley… I do see the young girl in Amy Winehouse and her struggles, and while I am still here I too hid much pain and confusion from my parents extramarital relation and separation. I am lucky to have realized at 35, my experience with using alcohol to hide my pain when I was in my 20s, as so many others with alcoholism do.

She was a beautiful lady, the above photo is lovely. What a great talent.

Just wondering where you got this great picture. I think it’s rude to post awful pictures of someone when they die, but those are the majority of the pictures I can find of her, or the kind everyone wants to look at right now. Thanks :)

Sandy, we are social beings, and we learn from the examples of others. Winehouse was a great talent, and I regret her passing, but isn’t it a valuable example to see what her debauchery actually did to her?

now listen, yes this lady did drugs, and yes she destroyed her body with it, but she meant something to some people, she created something for humanity, now you might not appreciate it, but you must understand that other people out there do. Now personally i never liked her and I wasn’t so fond of her music but she did have a good voice and people loved her for it. Now you can go judge her all you want but you only make yourself look like a prick, who gives a shit if she did a lot of drugs? her life her choice and it shouldn’t affect you at all, unless if you are jealous of the fame she has. anyway RIP

Amy was a troubled person, she became week and fell into drugs, but that doesn’t mean she wasn’t a human being, and an extremely talented, gifted and extraordinary singer. She might have not been a perfect person, but her drug abuse is overshadowed by the emotions she causes in people with her music. I love amy’s music, and her lyrics are just beautiful. Back to black, he can only hold her, Mr. magic, valerie and tears dry on their own are but a few of her lyrically rich songs. I just hope people are kind enough to think of her loved ones and fans and stop the childish jokes. The attention you are getting is not good at all so just please stop it.

when Back To Black came out I judged her and I wouldn’t listen to her music because of the way she was….but, finally, last year I listened through both of her albums and fell in love with her on the first listen…. I hoped, and even prayed for her, that she would straighten out and release another album….even thought about mailing a letter to her in hopes to show her my support….I am sad she is gone, I even cried. I have never met her or seen her live…tbh I haven’t even watched many videos, but I can tell from her music (and her eyes) that she lived in great and deep pain and am thankful that I have something so real to relate to when I’m feeling low….thank you Amy. I’m sorry people wouldn’t let you be…may you be in peace now. <3

R.I.P Amy you were so so talented and me and many others are sad to have seen the end to your talent while you were so young and everybody commenting about drugs… really? come on we all know that she had a major problem but the problems a person has don’t make the person themselves

It seems that Gene is blind to people’s internal “demons”. Maybe said “Doctor” with the big degree should go back and study a mix of psychology and sociology. Or better yet, go integrate yourself in the slums and study some human behavior.
