The Atlas Shrugged movie will be a limited release. You can supposedly increase the odds of its coming to a theatre near you by entering your zip code here.

An amusing Salon piece on what you might think the film was about if you only had the trailer to go on.

“Limited release” = direct to video, essentially.

I am guessing this will play in 5 theaters so that it’s not actually DTV, but that’s the reality. They must be hoping for a lot of rentals on Netflix.

I wonder if this will just make the situation worse – we already had a “lone, Randian millionaire” making this movie, opening it up to the obvious criticisms, and now it’s not even going to get a theatrical release.

Hmmm. I know Atlas Shrugged (and to a lesser extent The Fountainhead) are the best known books, but in the last 30 years we have had many other libertarian, even anarchistic, novels.
Maybe we would have more success trying to get a movie made from, say, Alongside Night. Or even The Moon is a Harsh Mistress.
(Or The Third Revolution by Anthony Lewis, but I haven’t read that one yet.)

Schulman is in the course of trying to get Alongside Night made.

If the idea is to open people to new ideas, what’s the point of releasing it to people who “demand” it? I mean, we’re already open to those ideas. Well, you have to make your money, I guess! Hopefully they release it in at least one theater in every major city. When I gave my zip code, San Diego had 31 “demands”. That’s not even enough to fill own showing!
