Side Order

Jascha HeifetzToday’s paper contains a great quote attributed to Jascha Heifetz:

No matter what side of an argument you’re on, you always find some people on your side that you wish were on the other side.

But according to Heifetz’s official website, the actual quote is:

No matter what side of an argument you’re on, you always find some people on your side that wish you were on the other side.

Equally true, but a somewhat different flavour.

I must have had to re-read each quote four times or more to find the difference… it’s “you”!

If he kept the format the same for both it would’ve been more readily apparent:

No matter what side of an argument you’re on, you always find some people on your side that you wish were on the other side.

No matter what side of an argument you’re on, you always find some people on your side that wish you were on the other side.

Format changes might help improve scansion though…

As a kid I once spent the longest time trying to figure out what was supposed to be wrong with:

      APPLES
      IN THE
      THE TREES

Hmm, it looked more deceptive the way it was formatted then than it does here ….

They usually put it in some sort of pyramidal shape. I admit I didn’t catch it the first time someone showed it to me either. Then again I think my brain has learned charitability with the mistakes of others so well as to forgive it and not make me conscious of it.

Very subtle. I almost went crazy. Luckily, I read the comments.

I wonder if the difference has something to do with how one perceives oneself. Someone from a persecuted minority might more readily assume that he is the one who is out of place.
