Another Anthem

Who said this?

It is so easy to say “we” and bow our heads together.
I must say “I” alone and bow my head alone
for it is I alone who is living my life.
I have beloved companions
but they do not eat nor sleep for me
and even they must say “I.”

See the answer.

I see what you mean; but the Anthem connection seems still closer.

I didn’t manage to guess this right at all. I thought it was Zamayatin!

I found it interesting/amusing that in a passage before the one you quote, “the author” expresses indignation at the idea of a collective guilt:

    but I am sick
    so sick
at hearin “we all share the blame” for every
church bombing, gun battle, mine disaster,
poverty explosion, an president killing that
    comes about.

Would Rand have disagreed? About a year before “the author” wrote that, Ayn Rand had written:

Anyone who has ever felt resentment against the good for being the good and has given voice to it, is the murderer of Marilyn Monroe.

    Would “the author” have disagreed?

Can you imagine a conversation between the two of them on this topic?
