The first of ten Galactica webisodes premieres today to bridge the gap between the previous season, or half-season, or whatever they’re calling it, and the next, um, ditto.
SPOILER ALERT #1: If you haven’t finished watching the previous season, or half-season, or whatever they’re calling it, you shouldn’t watch these webisodes yet.
SPOILER ALERT #2: Don’t read the comments section here until you’ve watched the first webisode.
WARNING: HERE BE SPOILERS!
Ive complained before that when Ron Moore finally got around to keeping his promise to include a same-sex relationship on BSG, he gave us a lesbian couple in which one has the other raped and tortured and the other kills the first in revenge. My objection wasnt to the storyline itself, which was a solid story, but to the notion that, after bashing Star Trek for its timidity in such matters, Moore had spent three years looking for just the right way to introduce a same-sex relationship into BSG for the first time and had come up with this!
The new webisodes now introduce a second same-sex relationship, and the outed character is Felix Gaeta. (I dont recognise the other guy.) I guess this is a less offensive choice than the Gina/Cain storyline, but its still a bit problematic. Given that Gaeta has generally been a somewhat weak and passive character, this choice in a way plays into traditional heterosexist stereotypes as much as the first one does. I mean, why not Doc Cottle?
P.S. – You can also see a preview clip from an upcoming episode.
