In related news, Gary Chartier has decided to boycott air travel in order to protest the irradiate-or-grope screening process; I’ll be reading out his responses (along with Kevin Carson’s commentary) in absentia sua. Doug Den Uyl will also not be attending (though he’s not boycotting anything as far as I know); Doug Rasmussen will read out their joint commentary.
The stuff on ideological filters that reinforce double standards is especially good. The Murdock column at NRO that Balko links to is probably relevant. Murdock writes — presumably with a straight face — that executing Manning would shut up the people who flap their gums in ways that empower murderers. He writes this immediately after advocating the murder of someone who undermined the state’s ability to commit mass murder. Murdock himself is empowering one of the most prolific murderers in history.

Regarding the Boétie/Hume argument, what do you think of this paper? He argues that collective action problems do most of the work in maintaining state power, and that ideology is nonessential.
Michael, I know that’s not directed at me, but I really enjoyed both this paper and Roderick’s. I found that contrasting this with Roderick’s paper shines all kinds of light on both sides. I blogged this in response to it and how — in some respects — it dovetails well with Roderick’s work.

Thanks. I finally had some time to fix the outstanding issues with it. Regarding your site, I would rethink the white-text-on-black-background idea. It burns the eyes to look at it, and you tend to post long essays. Makes it harder to read them. I think the most extreme example of that design is dvdbeaver.com, which posts large white text on a black background, for example: http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDCompare5/hardboiled.htm
The image of the text gets burned into the eyes. Your site uses gray text, which doesn’t hurt as bad but it still hurts.
I seriously appreciate the feedback. I’ll try out some new combos in the next few days; I’d love to hear what you think when I change it around. And any other feedback is more than welcome.
The other thing is you can use Google webfonts to improve the text. One of the fonts that’s available is the Ubuntu font, which is used by default in Maverick and beyond. That might fit in with the look you’re trying for. It’s used on all of the official Ubuntu sites now. The Google fonts work in all modern browsers.

That’s not bad, but I think the text could be a bit brighter, like the brightness you are using for the links.
I just didn’t want eye-burning text again. I’m glad you say the link brightness is alright. BTW: I really dig the shadows on the yellow response-mode text. Nice touch.
