For those following the saga of the missing all-left.net, which is supposed to forward to praxeology.net/all-left.htm, here’s an update, though not a particularly informative one. According to Yahoo’s control panel, I still own the all-left.net domain, I am fully paid up, and it is still forwarding to praxeology.net/all-left.htm. In fact, of course, it is forwarding to a paid ad site instead, despite Yahoo’s automated assurances to the contrary. So I have submitted a query to the actual humans in Yahoo’s customer care department. They’re supposed to get back to me within 24 hours. I await events.
You might double-check the expiry date on your domain registration, as dnsstuff.com and others currently list it as March 19th, 2008.
leftlibertarian.org is at your disposal if you need any sort of technical assistance.
Brad,
So say those sites. But Yahoo’s control panel says 2009. I look forward to Yahoo’s explanation.
Jeremy,
Thanks!
Obviously this tragedy calls for a proletarian revolution to rectify the problem.
Well, actually, were it not for monopoly capitalism, internet service providers would face greater competition and so would have to be more responsive to their customers.
Well you could try that way too. Which of the social anarchist ISPs and anarcho-capitalist ISPs will attract more customers I won’t venture to guess…
Also I found the capitalist equivalent of AFAQ, where you, David Friedman, and others are listed as “luminaries”: http://www.ozarkia.net/bill/anarchism/faq.html
The same guy has a pro-market analysis of Naomi Klein’s latest book here. I especially like his comment that, when picking a symbol of fascist corporatism, Klein’s ideological bias causes her to gloss over the more obvious candidates like Kissinger, Cheney, or Baker and to go instead with Milton Friedman.
A few years ago I moved all my web pages to the LSU server (since moved on again). After doing that I let http://www.joncogburn.com expire. Within a week it became a porn site (there’s nothing there now). Unfortunately I didn’t know that and even more unfortunately, I hadn’t changed the URL on my syllabus. So via the syllabus I told all my students in both my classes that they needed to go to this porn site to get notes for the class.
Everyone in class the second day was laughing and I just thought they liked my jokes. Finally, this poor Persian girl in a head scarf thingy said, “Dr. Cogburn do you know what’s going on with the web-site?” I didn’t have tenure at the time, and I was scared that the technologically illiterate among the adminstrators would somehow hold this against me. It freaked me out.
I found out the people who had bought the URL when I let it expire, and they were actually a company in Spain. I asked them if they could not use my name, and they said if they got a court order from a judge they would stop. So I didn’t bother. (I don’t know what the proper libertarian attitude about URLs should be; but in addition to the hassle and poor prospects of winning, trying to sue over something like that strikes me as not very copyleft.)
It was a strange year. When I’m embarassed while conveying something I come across as shifty sometimes, and as a result, I don’t think all of my students believed me that I had nothing to do with the site. At an APA somebody asked me a propo nothing, “So, do you actually get money from that website?” And the paranoia that the person would not believe me made me nervous and as is typical made me act like a stereotypical film portrayal of somebody doing a bad job lying.
When the Spanish company finally let their ownership of the URL lapse, I inexplicably felt as if my pride were severely wounded. Though I do take heart in the fact that the situation is causally overdetermined at best. Maybe the site went down because my name just does not have sufficient cachet, or maybe they just weren’t very competent at doing the internet pornography thing.
Sorry for going on so long. All this was to say that if it lapsed (even if it’s Yahoo’s fault for letting it lapse), you might be out of luck for a while.
Looks like it’s working now. It’s sending me to the correct site.
Yup, fixed.
Don’t you believe him — Jon is totally raking in the cash from his porn website.
O.K. so I went up one tax bracket, but the rate is still much higher than on my investment income.
