Dagny on a Train

Angelina Jolie [cross-posted at Liberty & Power]

Looks like Angelina Jolie will indeed be starring in the film version of Atlas Shrugged. (Conical hat tip to Wally Conger and Bob Bidinotto.)

This will likely translate into lots of new Rand readers, which is good. But as I’ve said before, we left-Randians will need to work hard to make sure new inquirers know about the full range of Rand’s legacy. I have some thoughts about how to do that – coming soon!

To be honest I never read Ayn Rand, but with two or 3 exceptions (you, Radgeek and Chris Sciabarra) I´ve never met a Rand enthusiast that did not show me her ugly right wing face, so I never ever considered her in a serious way. What of her work, in your opinion, shows her “left side”?

    Sergio,

    Yeah, what Joel said. 🙂

I don’t think Radgeek would consider himself a Rand enthusiast, exactly. So I guess that leaves just me and Chris!

But actually there are a number of Randians (or semi-Randians, or quasi-Randians, or post-Randians) that I think you might find more congenial. A few that come to mind off the top of my head are Bryan Register, Arthur Silber, Geoff Plauche, Lady Aster, Peter Saint-Andre, Stefan Molyneux, Neera Badhwar, Eric Mack, and Roger Bissell. (And I really like David Kelley’s book Contested Legacy, whatever misgivings I may have about the direction his institute has been heading.)

Also Abraham Maslow, Wikipedia’s Jimmy Wales, or Project Gutenberg’s Michael Hart (“I am doing Project Gutenberg for the most selfish of reasons – because I want a world that has Project Gutenberg in it.”).

    What misgivings might those be?

I sure would like a selfish, egotistical, independent and iron-fisted leader of a railroad empire for a girlfriend.

    Why a conical hat?

    “What misgivings might those be?”

They seem to be moving in a more conservative direction. And the appointment of Robert Bidinotto as editor of their main periodical is troubling in light of his increasing bloodthirstiness and abusiveness.

    Have you tried the classifieds?

    “Why a conical hat?”

I’m either a wizard or a dunce; opinions vary.
