I’m organising a panel on the topic of “Free-Market Anti-Capitalism?” (I put in the question mark to make it less scary for the faint of heart) at APEE’s next conference (11-13 April, 2010, in Las Vegas); I’ve got Sheldon Richman, Charles Johnson, and Shawn Wilbur lined up as presenters, and Steve Horwitz as discussant. (I plan just to moderate rather than present, unless someone drops out.)

Technically this is a “proposed” panel rather than a definite one, but when I first inquired about how to propose a panel, the response I received read, in part, “I’m very glad to know that you will be organizing a session for APEE 2010. Thanks for your interest and your efforts. I look forward to seeing you in Vegas,” followed by info about uploading the panel details to the APEE website, so I’m guessing approval is fairly pro forma.

2009 Molinari Symposium

The Molinari Society will be holding its sixth annual Symposium in conjunction with the Eastern Division of the American Philosophical Association in New York City, December 27-30, 2009. Here’s the latest schedule info:

As part of the APA’s continuing policy to prevent free riders, they’re not telling us the name of the room until we get to the registration desk. As part of our policy of combating evil we will of course broadcast the name of the room far and wide as soon as we learn it.

Happily, we have once again avoided any schedule conflict with the Ayn Rand Society (Dec. 28th, 11:15-1:45), and we expect to avoid conflict with the American Association for the Philosophic Study of Society also.

Minimal Update

I turned in my paperwork to the lawyer yesterday (along with his fee); he’s going to use it to negotiate with the tax cops.

This afternoon in the mail I got a tax lien notice (dated July 20th but postmarked yesterday); I don’t think it represents anything especially new, but I called the lawyer. He asked me to bring it by his office tomorrow morning. I asked “any news otherwise?” He said, “not yet.”

Interim Update

To those following (or, in some cases, literally invested in) my ongoing financial saga: I met with the lawyer today, and he gave me a phonebook-sized (well, Auburn-phonebook-sized, not Manhattan-phonebook-sized) stack of financial info forms to fill out, plus he needs copies of my old tax returns etc., so that’s my homework for tonight.

In other news, I’ve paid my rent for the month – thanks to the generosity of my readers. More developments as they unfold ….

The Saga Continues

So, first my bank tells me there’s a tax levy on my bank account – which I believed, since the Alabama tax dept. has been after me in any case. Then it turns out to be some alleged credit card debt from years ago. Now tonight, on returning home, just as I was beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel of my current financial crisis, I find a notice from the good old Alabama Department of Revenue demanding that I pay $9,097.15 within the next ten days or else they threaten to issue a writ to seize “your bank accounts and/or up to 25% of your wages, or issue an execution on real/personal property,” etc. I guess this just isn’t my week.

They say nobody knows you when you’re down and out – but wow, it sure isn’t true in my case. The outpouring of support and assistance from the libertarian community has been tremendous – over $5000 in gifts and loans in just two days, from all around the world, whether from old friends or from people I’ve never even met. To say that it has exceeded my expectations would be an understatement; it simply takes my breath away. Thank you all so much.

Once I’ve got my own situation together again I’d like to do what I can to “pay it forward” by contributing in some way to the creation and funding of some sort of libertarian mutual-aid network. Any thoughts or suggestions on how this might work?

In other news, my radio interview from this afternoon with “Little Alex in Wonderland” is now online to play or download. We ended up talking about natural law, racism, children’s rights, anarchism, class conflict theory, and left-libertarianism rather than about agorism specifically. He also has interviews available with Scott Horton (just before me on today’s show) and Gary Chartier (from the previous show), which I haven’t had a chance to listen to yet.
