Mystery Speaker, Part 2: Mystery Resolved

Roderick in dunce cap

Oops!

Well, embarrassingly enough, it turns out that last March I did receive, and accept, an invitation to speak at ISIL’s upcoming January conference.

I guess my financial crisis over the summer completely blew it out of my memory, and so I most unfairly took the fault to lie with ISIL rather than with your humble correspondent.

Well, I’m glad I noticed the announcement on the website, or I wouldn’t have made plans to attend! Now I will.

And at least now you know I haven’t been kidding about my conical hat….

Mystery Speaker

I was looking at this interesting list of speakers for an upcoming ISIL conference, when I noticed with surprise that one of them was … me.

I don’t know whether the other speakers on that list were actually contacted and asked to speak, but apart from seeing my name on that list I’ve heard nothing about it and – at $600 a pop – have not been planning to attend.

I’ve dropped them a puzzled note, and will report more when I learn more.

Update: I’ve learned more

Semi-Update

Re my financial saga, it’s been two months since my lawyer said he’d have something to tell me within two weeks (re whether the state tax department was going to accept my payment installment proposal). So I’ve just been waiting for the other shoe to drop. Now apparently it’s dropping some time next week; thus I should have some information to relay soon.

The Labyrinth of Fate, With Coffee

Puppets in Hell

Puppets in Hell

I’m back from the APS – which was fun, as usual.

For those in the Auburn area, there’ll be another session of caffeinated philosophy tomorrow at 5:00 at the Gnu’s Room (next to Amsterdam Café, near the corner of Gay and Samford). This time I’ll be part of a roundtable discussing free will; check out the poster here.

Milton in Paradise Lost describes the fallen angels in Hell enjoying a similar discussion:

Others apart sat on a hill retir’d,
In thoughts more elevate, and reasoned high
Of Providence, Foreknowledge, Will and Fate,
Fixed fate, free will, foreknowledge absolute;
And found no end, in wand’ring mazes lost.

But Milton’s fallen angels didn’t have the benefit of the Gnu’s Room’s excellent coffee, so I’m sure we’ll get it all sorted out.
