Mystery Speaker, Part 2: Mystery Resolved
Oops!
Well, embarrassingly enough, it turns out that last March I did receive, and accept, an invitation to speak at ISILs upcoming January conference.
I guess my financial crisis over the summer completely blew it out of my memory, and so I most unfairly took the fault to lie with ISIL rather than with your humble correspondent.
Well, Im glad I noticed the announcement on the website, or I wouldnt have made plans to attend! Now I will.
And at least now you know I havent been kidding about my conical hat….
The Labyrinth of Fate, With Coffee, Part 2
A couple of write-ups 1, 2 of the recent caffeinated philosophy event.
Mystery Speaker
I was looking at this interesting list of speakers for an upcoming ISIL conference, when I noticed with surprise that one of them was … me.
I dont know whether the other speakers on that list were actually contacted and asked to speak, but apart from seeing my name on that list Ive heard nothing about it and at $600 a pop have not been planning to attend.
Ive dropped them a puzzled note, and will report more when I learn more.
Update: Ive learned more
Semi-Update
Re my financial saga, its been two months since my lawyer said hed have something to tell me within two weeks (re whether the state tax department was going to accept my payment installment proposal). So Ive just been waiting for the other shoe to drop. Now apparently its dropping some time next week; thus I should have some information to relay soon.
The Labyrinth of Fate, With Coffee
Im back from the APS which was fun, as usual.
For those in the Auburn area, therell be another session of caffeinated philosophy tomorrow at 5:00 at the Gnus Room (next to Amsterdam Café, near the corner of Gay and Samford). This time Ill be part of a roundtable discussing free will; check out the poster here.
Milton in Paradise Lost describes the fallen angels in Hell enjoying a similar discussion:
Others apart sat on a hill retird,
In thoughts more elevate, and reasoned high
Of Providence, Foreknowledge, Will and Fate,
Fixed fate, free will, foreknowledge absolute;
And found no end, in wandring mazes lost.
But Miltons fallen angels didnt have the benefit of the Gnus Rooms excellent coffee, so Im sure well get it all sorted out.
