Mistakenly United
Okay, this is embarrassing.
There used to be an organisation with the name Protestants and Other Americans United for Separation of Church and State.
Later on they switched to the more diplomatic Americans United for Separation of Church and State.
And in more recent years theyve informally shortened it to Americans United.
And until today I had them mixed up with Citizens United. (Or, more precisely, I had Citizens United mixed up with them.)
Doh!
We Have Ways of Making You Cooperative
This story (CHT Tom Knapp) is a bit old, but I found this passage inteesting:
A 1993 survey of 188 companies conducted by the Washington State Office of Trade and Economic Development found that employee-owned firms grew no faster than conventional companies unless they gave workers a voice in management. Likewise, broader sharing of information and authority with workers didn’t boost growth unless that was combined with ownership. But firms that put the three together grew about 12% faster than their competitors.
Does anyone know if thereve been follow-up studies?

Does Culture Require Censorship and Corporate Privilege?
I havent read the book Free Ride: How Digital Parasites are Destroying the Culture Business, and How the Culture Business Can Fight Back by Rob Levine (definitely not to be confused with David Levine), but Levine summarises his case here, and Mike Masnick offers what seems to me a pretty devastating reply.
Cops vs. Law and Order
On the west coast, cops commit war crimes.
On the east coast, cops admit that corruption is a perk of their jobs, and get all indignant about being prosecuted.
Maybe we should start using the slogan no special rights for cops. (Of course, applied consistently that would make them not cops anymore. Which is fine with me.)
