Lifestyles of the Rich and Idle
Amidst all the endlessly tedious media hoopla over Ted Kennedys death, I heard one good anecdote. During a period when Kennedy was being attacked by an opponent for never having worked a day in his life, he supposedly visited an ironworks factory where he was accosted by a labourer who asked him: Is it true youve never worked a day in your life? As Kennedy hemmed and hawed, the labourer said: Believe me, you aint missed a thing.
Which in turn reminds me of the anecdote about Queen Victoria, who supposedly said: It must be fun to work, because its so much fun to watch other people work.
Which reminds me yet further of an old New Yorker cartoon of an obviously wealthy woman lounging contentedly while, nearby, her husband (or perhaps lover) is telling a friend: I never told her about the Depression. She would have worried.

Anti-Life Justifies My Blog!
On this date in 1917, comic-book writer-artist Jack Kirby was born (originally under the name Jacob Kurtzberg). Over the course of his career (until his death in 1994), Kirby would be involved in the creation of many of the comic book industrys most recognisable characters.
With collaborator Stan Lee, he helped create Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, the Avengers, the Black Panther, the Silver Surfer, Dr. Doom, Magneto, Galactus, the Skrulls, the Inhumans, the Mighty Thor, and Nick Fury. (Rather than Lees simply writing a script for Kirby to illustrate, Lee and Kirby would brainstorm a story outline, Kirby would create the pictorial layout often adding new elements as they occurred to him and only then did Lee compose and insert captions and dialogue; so Kirbys contribution was greater than the notation Lee, script; Kirby, pencils might suggest.)
With other collaborators he helped create Captain America, Manhunter, Kobra, the Challengers of the Unknown, and a couple of incarnations of the Sandman. In his solo work he came up with Kamandi, OMAC, Machine Man, Darkseid, the New Gods, the Eternals, Devil Dinosaur, Etrigan the Demon, and in 1958 the Face on Mars. (And thats just scratching the surface.)
Over the years Kirbys energetic drawing style grew increasingly distinctive and his story ideas more wackily inventive; his work had a big impact on my childhood, and Ive blogged about him fairly often. Happy birthday, Jack.
From Fox to Cat?
Having thought Megan Fox came across as a vacant, sluggish zombie in the first Transformers movie (I didnt see the second), Ive been less than thrilled at her casting in Jonah Hex; so I was understandably alarmed at this latest rumor (mercifully contradicted here) that Fox is going to be cast as the next Catwoman.
But this comment from Tracy Saboe reminds me that some actors need a good director (and/or script) to show what theyre capable of. For example, I would never have thought that Natalie Portman was a good actress if Id seen only her performances in the Star Wars movies, nor would I have been especially impressed by Liam Neeson; likewise, I would never have thought the Marx Brothers were all that funny if Id seen only some of the late duds like Room Service. Also, check out the deleted scenes on the DVD of The Big Sleep to see Lauren Bacall (of all people) coming across as dull and lacklustre, until they reshot her scenes with more directorial guidance. And the clips Ive seen of Foxs performance in Jennifers Body, though fairly cheesy, at least manifest more liveliness than was apparent in Transformers, so maybe I should give her the benefit of the doubt.
Still … Catwoman?

Libertarian Alliance
Can a libertarian be a conservative? Answer this question and win £1000. (CHT Joel Schlosberg.)
Although Im quoted in the announcement in apparent support of the no side, I actually think the answer to the question is yes. Of course its a yes, but … (in that I take libertarianism to be thickly bound up with lefty values even if it doesnt strictly entail them and I could sign on to statements such as the libertarian rejects conservatism in the same spirit as I would such Thompson-style categoricals as the tufted warbler flies south in the winter even if many actual tufted warblers, owing to disorientation and bewilderment, never get airborne), but I reckon the contest judges will accept yes, but … answers.
