Crying in the Bewilderness

Wonka's flying elevator

I just rode the elevator with a confused man.

So we’re on the 3rd floor of Haley Center, in front of the elevators. I push the “up” call button and he pushes the “down.” An elevator arrives; it indicates it’s going up. We both get on. I push the button for the 6th floor; he says, “oh, is this going up? well, then I’ll ride up and then go back and get one that’s going down.”

As I exit at the 6th floor, he pushes a button – for the 3rd floor.

(And he wasn’t even a philosopher!)

    Must have been Bobby Lowder.

I hope he wasn’t a professor! Perhaps you should have suggested that he take the stairs back down to the third floor, then catch the elevator from 3 to 1. I wonder if he would have thought it a good idea.

He seemed younger than the average professor but older than the average student, and he didn’t quite have the typical air of either.

He identified a spatio-temporal algorithm that allows him to hack his way into heaven. (Hint: It’s in the Haley Center basement).

I was reminded of this story that Konrad Lorenz tells about his goose who got into the habit of always flying first to the downstairs window before it felt ready to head upstairs to Lorenz’s bedroom. (What Lorenz was doing with the goose in his bedroom I politely refrain from inquiring.)

Reminds me of when I end up behind people at fast food restaurants that ask how much something costs while ignoring the big-ass menu board behind the registers.
