I love that banner. I’m gonna stick it on my blog. (Where I also have your great “Abolish the Presidency” banner as well, which links to Spooner’s letter to Grover Cleveland.)

No, we will not be satisfied.

    Bob’s following me.

Sorry to go off-topic but I thought I should mention that the LNF website has gone down.

    Libertarian Nation is gone.

Yeah, I dropped a note to the LNF webmaster a couple of days ago, but haven’t heard back yet. (On the bright side, it’s all on archive.org .)

Darn! I actually just added the Formulations page to my browser’s bookmarks list of online periodicals a few days ago (knew about it much earlier, but am currently getting my bookmarks in order). I was also recently using the software HTTrack to make local hard drive copies of various websites that I liked for personal use in case they went down, and could’ve done the LN site. Keep me posted about what happens to the site!

Still waiting to hear back from Wayne; in the meantime, you can still do the LNF site via archive.org if you’re so inclined.

I’ve been using the Google cache and the MSN Live cache of the site’s pages along with TinyURL to make references to Libertarian Nation’s stuff.

Good, but archive.org is safer; it doesn’t expire the way (I believe) the caches do.

As much as I love archive.org, it has its problems too — it has a lot of technical glitches; is pretty spotty on multimedia files as opposed to plain HTML; and it’s possible for a site that was fully available in the past, sometimes for years, to be suddenly blocked by a robots.txt exclusion, often by a domain squatter or someone else who isn’t the original owner of the site.

I actually emailed Roderick about the LN site temporarily disappearing way back in January 2006 (I’m hoping that this recent outage is similarly brief, maybe they have a recurring habit of not renewing the domain on time). I was able to dig up the message from my email archives, so here it is (I’m amused by the humorous tone of the email, and I’m trying to spread the phrase “egalitarian, compassionate, “bleeding-heart” libertarianism” as far and wide as possible):

“The other day I tried visiting the archives of Formulations at — and noticed that the entire site is apparently gone, replaced by one of those “domain squatting” pages. Cue the Darth Vader Episode III “NOOOOOOOOOOO!” That had some great stuff, including many of your classic essays: “Who’s the Scrooge? Libertarians and Compassion”, “Punishment vs. Restitution: A Formulation”, “The Libertarian Case Against Intellectual Property Rights”, “In Defense of Public Space”, “Beyond the Boss: Protection from Business in a Free Nation”, “A Plea for Public Property”… These are exactly the essays that I need to have on hand to show people about “egalitarian, compassionate, “bleeding-heart” libertarianism”! I tried a google search on the article titles to see if the site had moved somewhere else, but it doesn’t turn up anything. Of course, it’s still possible to get to the articles via the Wayback Machine on archive.org but that’s not the same as having the actual site. Do you know what’s up with the site?”

Well, I just found a copy of the Formulations archives (except for the last 3 issues) online here:
