Unwelcome Opacity

locked book A great badness has entered the world; or rather, a great goodness has left it. (Well, Augustine would say those come to the same thing.) I notice that Amazon.com seems to have entirely eliminated its “Look Inside” and “Search Inside” options.

When did this happen? Why did this happen? Anybody know?

I think you must be mistaken.

I used “Look Inside” earlier today.

Well, it’s gone on all the books I looked at that used to have it, and I couldn’t find one that had it. What book did you look at?

This is unbelievable. Just this morning, I was using the “look inside” feature without trouble. I was looking at books on the philosophy of education (edited) by Randall Curren, Eamonn Callan, Harry Brighouse, Joy Palmer, Nel Noddings, etc.

But now I go to Amazon and I find, to my horror, that you are right. Ugh.

Some books still have it but it does seem many no longer do. For Whom the Bell Tolls is one that still has it.

I first noticed this yesterday, but from chiggle’s testimony some of it was done today, so the evil seems to be spreading in waves through Amazon’s website. I bet For Whom the Bell Tolls will go in due course. [Let me look. Yup, it’s gone already.]

My first thought was that it was some IP issue, but now it occurs to me that perhaps it’s connected with Amazon’s marketing of Kindle.
