Clash of the Titans

This pic is from the ad for next year’s FreedomFest:

Dream Debate of the Century! Steve Moore vs. Paul Krugman

So the “dream debate of the century” is between a Keynesian who thinks the 9/11 attacks were good for the economy and a George Bush hagiographer who supports economic boycotts as a tool of American imperialism.

So, um.

The Krugman column involves a kind of epic-quality failure of reflective equilibrium. He starts out telling us how 9/11 is a golden opportunity for pushing Keynesian policies, and then all of a sudden, we get this:

After the attacks, I found myself wondering whether some politicians would try to exploit the horror to push their usual partisan agendas.

Very little likelihood of his seeing any similarities between that and the column he’s just written.

The theme at Freedomfest this year is “Can We Restore the American Dream?” Maybe they can tweak it to: “Can We Keep America Dreaming?”

The debate question is a parochial cliché to start with. Epic death match: establishmentarian centre~right white guy and establishment centre~left white guy vie for control of establishmentarian narrative. If that’s your world, I guess this might feel impressive.

Also I hate that orange tie. I. Hate. It. I vote for the other guy.

Is it just me, or is Moore about to whack Krugman with the flag?

    • Irfan Khawaja November 10, 2014 at 1:43 pm #

Not with the flag. With his bare open hand. But he’s not looking at his target, and Krugman’s about to block and parry. My prediction is that that’s essentially how the verbal part of the debate will go, too. So my money is on Krugman to win. Of course, in this economy, the whole problem is that I don’t have any money.

I just read the Stephen Moore piece that Roderick linked to. To repeat: my money is on Krugman to win. Whether I have any or not.

I don’t know whatever intellect Krugman may have had he spent long ago. Moore would have to be pretty terrible to lose to him, I think it will be a draw.
