Speaking of public intellectuals getting it wrong, I spent much of the last week looking into the ways atheism is portrayed in the public. I spent some time on Richard Dawkins’s website and stumbled upon a bit of Spencer defamation. Obviously I think Dawkins understands his field better than Krugman understands economics, but it was disturbing to see a respected intellectual and expert on Charles Darwin get something so wrong either due to laziness or taking for granted the idea of Spencer as “social Darwinist.”
