Pascal suggested that had Cleopatra’s nose been shorter, the course of history would have been changed. Apparently, he meant that Mark Antony wouldn’t have found a short nose attractive. There is an interesting discussion in an essay of 1916 by the Anglo-Irish historian J.B. Bury, “Cleopatra’s Nose.”
